Early seventeenth-century documents describe captain Pieter Vernier — married in 1589 in Dordrecht to Maria van Beverwijck — as coming "from an old noble family of Mechelen". That description is, so far, no more than a characterisation in someone else's pen — not a family tree, not proof. This page is the first step towards actually investigating that: a working list of Vernier mentions from the Mechelen archives, mainly aldermen's deeds and orphan-chamber registers from the sixteenth century. The underlying files have not yet been examined — this is therefore explicitly raw, unverified material, meant as a starting point, not a conclusion. Important: this entire story — this possibly noble captain Pieter Vernier and the Mechelen namesakes below — stands completely apart from our own, confirmed family line (stamvader Laurens Verniers and his descendants). Do not, for now, take any of the names below as proven family of one another, let alone of our own family line.

What stands out immediately: the same names recur repeatedly on the same dates — Karel (Charles) Vernier with Anna Robijns appears in both the aldermen's deeds and the orphan-chamber registers, and Pieter and François Vernier are even named together in the same deed on 22 April 1583 and 15 July 1585 — presumably brothers, or otherwise close family. Earlier, in 1540-1544, the orphan-chamber registers also show an Andries Vernier, possibly of the preceding generation. Whether that points to close family (father, brothers, sons) must be shown by the underlying files.

Once the files themselves have been examined — using name, date and source location as a guide — this page can be expanded with what the deeds actually deal with (purchase, sale, guardianship, inheritance), and with an attempt to connect the various Verniers/Vernier mentions to one another and to captain Pieter Vernier.

What the initial sources show for each figure

Andries Vernier is the oldest bearer of the name in this list: married to Alit Dorlant(dt), recorded in the Mechelen orphan-chamber registers of 16 November 1540 and 3 March 1544. His generation lies some forty years before that of Pieter, François and Karel — by age he could be their father or uncle, though that is for now guesswork.

Karel (Charles) Vernier is the best documented of the three. He can be found repeatedly, between 1574 and 1586, in both the aldermen's deeds and the orphan chamber, usually together with his wife Anna Robijns (in 1576 also with a Kathelijne Meeus, possibly an earlier or later wife), and is called "weduwnaar" (widower) in 1580. Two new finds give him a face for the first time: in August 1578, as "Carel Vernier", he is appointed one of the Geswoornen van de Poorterye (sworn officers of the citizenry) of Mechelen — a municipal office, recorded in the Vervolgh tot de Cronycke van Mechelen alongside colleagues such as Mr. Marten Roelants and Joncker Philip De Clerck, during a reshuffling of the town government by Archduke Matthias (Cronycke van Mechelen). And a Zeeland notarial deed from 1591 refers back to an agreement of 1570, at the time executed "voir Kaerle Vernijer, Notario binnen Mechelen" (before Kaerle Vernijer, notary within Mechelen) — so Karel Vernier was, at least by 1570, also a notary (RAZE 2039). A municipal office together with the notarial profession point to a man of standing and education, exactly the kind of profile that would fit an "old noble" or at least well-to-do family.

François Vernier, besides the 1583 and 1585 aldermen's deeds, also appears in the resolutions of the States-General: under number 3786, the petitions of the widow of Claes Honne van Venlo (cornet of the Count of Hoenloo) and of François Vernier are forwarded "for settlement" to the Council of State (Resolutions of the States-General). A petition to the States-General, in the company of a cornet from the army of the Count of Hohenlohe, may point to a military or financial matter — but without the full text of the petition that remains guesswork.

Pieter Vernier, finally, appears twice together with François in the same aldermen's deed (1583, 1585), but at present has no distinguishing source of his own — his trail still needs further investigation. It is important to stress here: this is not the same person as captain Pieter Vernier, who married Maria van Beverwijck in Dordrecht in 1589 and who is the subject of the separate story — this Mechelen Pieter from the 1580s is, for now, an unplaced namesake, possibly of an older generation (father, uncle) or otherwise related, but that remains to be shown.

The Mechelen table above shows a family that, over the course of more than a century, steadily established itself in property, administration and law — from notary to Geswoorne van de Poorterye. A direct link between these Mechelen Verniers and our own stamvader Laurens has not been demonstrated.
