R.M. Verniers, neef van mijn vader, die in de jaren zeventig veel werk heeft verricht in het destijds nog moeilijk toegankelijke archief in Weesp. Zijn onderzoek is uiteindelijk opgenomen als het familie Verniers-dossier bij het
CBG | Centrum voor Familiegeschiedenis (cbg.nl), waar het familiearchief berust. Dat materiaal zal in de komende maanden geleidelijk op deze site worden verwerkt; wat tot nu toe op de site staat, is in de eerste plaats afkomstig uit ander, nog niet eerder ontsloten onderzoek — het werk van R.M. Verniers zelf volgt hierna stap voor stap.
Naast het werk van R.M. Verniers heb ik zelf, als amateurhistoricus, de afgelopen tien jaar duizenden archiefstukken, tal van verhalen en allerlei andere interessante feiten en weetjes over de familie Verniers gevonden en verzameld in mijn eigen familiearchief. Ook dit materiaal zal te zijner tijd worden overgedragen aan het CBG, zodat het net als het werk van R.M. Verniers voor toekomstig onderzoek bewaard blijft. Het onderzoek van R.M. Verniers eindigde bij Pieter Lourens Verniers, de eerste in de lijn die in Weesp is beschreven; ik heb de lijn sindsdien verder teruggebracht tot onze huidige stamvader, de doopsgezinde oudste Laurens Verniers.
Deze website is niet af. Ze zal de komende tijd waarschijnlijk wekelijks worden aangevuld: er zijn nog veel verhalen die niet verteld zijn. Op dit moment staat er, naar schatting, zo'n 10% van alle beschikbare informatie op deze site — de rest volgt geleidelijk.
Het onderliggende onderzoek zelf is over de jaren, zonder AI, verzameld en uitgezocht: archiefbezoeken, transcripties, kruisverwijzingen, geduld. Met behulp van Claude AI is die verzameling informatie vervolgens verwerkt tot deze website en tot de vele verhalen die erop staan. Alle verhalen zijn nagelopen en de transcripties zijn beoordeeld. Toch kan het voorkomen dat niet alles klopt — bijvoorbeeld door transcriptiefouten van Transkribus — al geven aanvullende bronnen daar vaak alsnog duidelijkheid over. Er is dus niet over één nacht ijs gegaan. Mocht een verhaal desondanks niet lekker lopen, of mocht er iets niet kloppen, laat het dan vooral weten via de daarvoor beschikbare mogelijkheden op deze site.
Alle informatie, aktes en bronnen op deze website zijn terug te vinden en op juistheid na te lopen, ook wanneer iemand anders de getoonde informatie voor eigen onderzoek wil gebruiken. Alles op deze site wordt dus met bronnen en onderzoek onderbouwd; bij sommige verhalen en gegevens blijft het bij een hypothese — dat wordt in de verhalen zelf steeds duidelijk aangegeven.
Special thanks to R.M. Verniers, my father's cousin, who did a great deal of work in the seventies in the then still difficult-to-access archive in Weesp. His research was eventually incorporated as the Verniers family dossier at the CBG | Centre for Family History (cbg.nl), where the family archive is held. That material will gradually be processed on this site over the coming months; what is on the site so far comes primarily from other, not previously unlocked research — R.M. Verniers' own work will follow step by step after that. Below, two pieces from his legacy already, with a fuller acknowledgement to follow later.
Alongside R.M. Verniers' work, I myself, as an amateur historian, have spent the past ten years finding and collecting thousands of archival documents, numerous stories and all sorts of other interesting facts and details about the Verniers family in my own family archive. This material, too, will in due course be transferred to the CBG, so that it, like R.M. Verniers' work, is preserved for future research. R.M. Verniers' research ended with Pieter Lourens Verniers, the first in the line described in Weesp; I have since traced the line further back to our current stamvader, the Mennonite elder Laurens Verniers.
This website is not finished. It will likely be added to on a weekly basis for some time to come: many stories have not yet been told. At the moment, an estimated 10% of all available information is on this site — the rest will follow gradually.
The underlying research itself was gathered and worked out over the years without AI: archive visits, transcriptions, cross-references, patience. With the help of Claude AI, that collected information was then turned into this website and into the many stories on it. Every story has been checked and the transcriptions reviewed. Even so, not everything may be entirely correct — for instance because of transcription errors from Transkribus — though additional sources often still provide clarity. None of this was done carelessly. Should a story nonetheless read awkwardly, or should something be incorrect, please say so through the options available on this site.
All information, deeds and sources on this website can be found and checked for accuracy, including by anyone who wishes to use the information shown here for their own research. Everything on this site is therefore backed by sources and research; for some stories and details it remains a hypothesis — this is always clearly indicated within the stories themselves.
