Drie labels: bevestigd, waarschijnlijk, hypothese
| […] | Onleesbaar of weggelaten gedeelte. |
This page explains how the research behind Maison Verniers is done: which sources I use, how I transcribe them, and when I call something confirmed, probable or a hypothesis. That way you can check every claim on this site yourself and build on it in your own research.
Three labels: confirmed, probable, hypothesis
Every Hidden Story carries a label at the top. The label concerns the story's central claim: how firmly is the connection with the Verniers family and the confirmed family line supported?
- ConfirmedThe central claim rests on primary sources — deeds, registers, wills — that corroborate each other. Every step can be checked on this site through a source reference.
- ProbableThe sources point strongly in one direction, but a link is still missing: for example a deed that states a father-son relationship in so many words.
- HypothesisA possible connection not (yet) confirmed by sources. The facts in the story itself are documented; the connection with the family line is a working hypothesis under further investigation.
Within a story, an individual claim may have a different level than the story as a whole. Where that is the case, the text itself says so.
Transcription conventions
Old deeds are transcribed as literally as possible, in the original spelling. Transcriptions were made with the help of Transkribus and then checked and corrected by hand; where a reading remains doubtful, this is indicated. The following signs are used:
| [de], [dr] | Expanded abbreviation, for example en[de] or Jans[dr]. |
| [word] | Text supplied by me that is missing or damaged in the source. |
| [?] | Uncertain reading of the preceding word or name. |
| […] | Illegible or omitted passage. |
| [Ondertekend:] | Editorial note; not text from the source itself. |
Optionally add: conventions for capitals, punctuation, line breaks and struck-through text.
Sources and archives
The research rests first and foremost on archival records, among others from the Amsterdam City Archives (notarial archives, betrothal, baptism and burial registers), the Ghent City Archives, the Mechelen City Archives, the Breda City Archives, the Zeeuws Archief, the Westfries Archief, the Regional Archives of Dordrecht, Erfgoed Leiden, the State Archives in Belgium and the Verniers family dossier at the CBG | Centre for Family History. I also use printed sources and literature. Every source has its own number; the full overview is in the Reference section.
To be completed: which archives and series have not (yet) been searched, so other researchers know where there is still something to gain.
Method
The research itself was collected and worked out over the years without AI: archive visits, transcriptions, cross-references. With the help of Claude AI, that collection was then turned into the stories on this website. Every story and every transcription was subsequently checked against the sources.
I deliberately publish hypotheses, even when they are not yet proven — but always recognisable as hypotheses. If you spot an error or have an addition, please get in touch. Substantive changes are recorded per page under Version and changes, at the bottom of every story.
Citing
At the bottom of every story you will find a ready-made citation, including the date of the last modification, so it is always clear which version you have read. You are welcome to use the content with attribution; copying texts verbatim is not permitted.
